The minimum distance of wind turbines from residential areas in Germany is not regulated uniformly by the federal government but by the individual federal states, meaning that there are a large number of different regulations.<\/em>

Around half of the federal state regulations are based on the blanket thousand metre rule, whereby wind turbines may not be located closer than 1000 metres to a (general\/clean) residential area.<\/em>

For years, this regulation has been a major bone of contention in the expansion of renewable energies and wind power in North Rhine-Westphalia. However, the thousand metre rule has now been approved by a large majority in the NRW state parliament. <\/em>abolished<\/em><\/a>to drive forward the expansion of further wind power and achieve the climate targets.<\/em>

According to the \"State Association for Renewable Energies\", wind turbines will nevertheless continue to be located several hundred metres away from residential areas in North Rhine-Westphalia, partly due to noise protection regulations.<\/em>

Nonetheless, the abolition of the thousand metre rule, taking into account noise protection regulations, should reduce the area that may be built on with wind turbines in future by <\/em>42 per cent<\/em><\/a> The result of the calculation by the \"Landesamt f\u00fcr Natur, Umwelt und Verbraucherschutz NRW\" (LANUV) must be taken into account.<\/em>
